Garmin inReach Subscription Plans in South Africa: What It Really Costs

The inReach Mini 3 and Mini 3 Plus are a one-off purchase, but the satellite connection is a monthly plan that you take out with Garmin. Here is what each plan includes, what it costs in rand, and how to pick the cheapest one for the way you travel.

How buying works

You buy the device from us. You then activate it and choose your plan with Garmin directly, in the Garmin Messenger or Earthmate app or on Garmin's website, once you have the device in your hands. SatComms does not sell or bill the subscription. Garmin sets the plan prices and can change them at any time, so always confirm the current price on Garmin's plans page before you subscribe.

To activate, you need a phone number that can receive a text message. Garmin's manual says internet-based (VoIP) numbers are not supported.

inReach plan prices in South Africa

Every plan includes emergency SOS messaging to Garmin's 24/7 response centre. A one-off activation fee of R849 applies to every plan.

*Estimate. Garmin's South African page showed only the Enabled price (R169) when we checked on 5 November 2026. The other three are estimated from Garmin's US prices, using the same rand-to-dollar ratio that Garmin's Enabled price and activation fee follow. Confirm on Garmin before you subscribe.

You can pause it for free

You can suspend a plan for up to 12 months at no charge and without paying the activation fee again. On the Mini 3 and Mini 3 Plus, SOS keeps working while a plan is suspended if the device has the latest software; messaging, tracking and weather are switched off. If you cancel instead of suspending, coming back costs the R849 activation fee again. If a plan stays suspended for more than 12 months, the device is moved automatically to the Enabled plan (R169 a month at the time of writing). Plans bill monthly and renew automatically.

What it costs in practice

These are plan costs only, using the prices above.

The occasional weekend hiker. Enabled, used only in the months you travel. A month with 10 check-ins and 10 texts costs about R169 + R20 + R100 = R289. Suspend the plan between trips.

A two-week overland trip. Essential for one month, about R320, covers 50 texts. If you expect closer to 100 texts, Standard at about R635 is the safer choice, because 80 texts on Essential would be about R320 + R300 in overage = R620.

A guide or someone who is out most of the year. Premium, about R1,060 a month (roughly R12,700 a year), for unlimited messaging and 2-minute tracking.

The cheapest plan is the one whose included messages roughly match what you send. Check each month's use and move between plans as it changes.

Photos and voice messages

Only the Mini 3 Plus can send photos and voice messages. Each one counts against the photo and voice allowance on your plan, or costs R20 on Enabled and as overage. If you never plan to send them, the Mini 3 is the cheaper device. See our Mini 3 vs Mini 3 Plus comparison.

South Africa notes

LTE connectivity on inReach smartwatches is not available in South Africa, and satellite coverage and local rules apply wherever you travel, so check both for your route.
