How to Make Your Electric Fence "Smart" (Without Replacing It)

If you've got an electric fence at home, you've got an energizer box somewhere on the property — the little unit that pulses power through the wires and beeps when something's wrong. For most of us, that box does exactly one thing: it runs quietly in the background, and we only think about it when it stops working.
Here's the problem with that. Your fence has no way of telling you what it's doing. You can't check its status from your phone. You can't turn it off remotely for the gardener or a contractor. And if it fails at 2am, you usually only find out when someone tells you — or when something goes wrong.
The good news: you don't need a new fence system to fix this. A single small device, wired into the energizer you already have, can make the whole thing smart. Here's how it works, in plain terms.

What you're actually adding: the Shelly 1
The device is made by Shelly, a company that makes small Wi-Fi-connected relay modules for exactly this kind of retrofit job. The one that fits a fence energizer is called the Shelly 1 — about the size of a matchbox, and it sits inside the energizer's own enclosure rather than needing a box of its own.
Two versions are relevant here: the Shelly 1 Gen3 and the newer Shelly 1 Gen4. For this project they do the same job — Gen3/Gen4 just refers to Shelly's hardware revision, not a difference in what the device can do for a fence. Either one works.
There's also a version called the Shelly 1PM (Gen3 or Gen4) — the "PM" stands for Power Monitoring. It adds the ability to measure how much electricity is flowing through its output, which is a genuinely nice feature for something like a geyser or a pool pump. For a fence energizer, though, it doesn't add anything: it can only measure AC current passing through its own switch output, not the fence's 12V control circuit or battery. So the plain Shelly 1 (no PM) is the simpler and cheaper choice for this specific job — save the PM version for an appliance where you actually want to track power draw.
Strip away the model naming and what you're left with is a device with three things that matter here:
One relay output — this is the part that actually does the switching. It stands in for pressing a button on the fence's wireless remote.
One switch input — lets the device read a signal already present in the circuit, which is what you'd use if you also want to detect alarm events later on.
Flexible power input — it can run off mains AC, or off 12–48V DC. That last part matters, because most fence energizers — including the common Nemtek Wizord range — already produce a 12V DC auxiliary output on their own terminal block. The Shelly can be powered directly from that, no separate adapter needed.
It also has built-in Wi-Fi and talks directly to a free app on your phone (or to a home automation system like Home Assistant, if you run one) — no separate hub or bridge required.
The basic idea of the install
You don't need to touch the high-voltage fence wires at all for this. The whole setup happens on the low-voltage control side of the energizer:
The energizer's 12V auxiliary output powers the Shelly directly — no separate adapter needed.
The Shelly's relay output connects to the energizer's existing "switch" terminal pair — the same two terminals the wireless remote control normally uses to arm and disarm the fence.
The Shelly is set up once in its app, connected to your home Wi-Fi, and configured in "switch" mode so it behaves the same way the remote used to.
Once that's done, arming and disarming your fence becomes something you can do from an app, from anywhere with an internet connection — not just from a remote sitting in a kitchen drawer. That's genuinely most of it. It's a low-voltage, low-risk job on the control side of the unit — but it does involve opening up an energized security device, so if you're not confident working inside electrical enclosures, this is a sensible one to hand to an installer rather than DIY.
Why bother?
A few reasons this is worth doing, beyond the novelty of "smart" for its own sake:
You can actually see the fence's status. Armed or disarmed, right now, on your phone — not "it was on last time I checked."
You can control it remotely. Contractor needs it off for twenty minutes? Family arriving while you're away? Done from your phone, no need to be on-site.
It removes a point of failure. Old wireless remote receivers age and fail quietly. A Shelly on your own Wi-Fi is one less proprietary black box in the chain.
It plugs into the bigger picture. If you're already running any kind of home automation — Home Assistant, an alarm panel, a camera system — the fence can now be part of that same picture instead of sitting completely isolated.
The bigger point
None of this requires ripping out working equipment. Most security hardware around South African homes was built long before "smart" was standard, and a lot of it — fences, gate motors, geysers — can be brought into the present with one inexpensive relay and an understanding of what its terminals actually do.
It's a small project, but it changes something fairly basic: whether your security equipment can tell you what it's doing, or whether you're just trusting that it is.
