Watch Your Car Live From Your Phone: Garmin Dash Cam Live in South Africa
You are in a mall, at the gym, or in a meeting. Your car is somewhere below you in a basement. Most dash cams can only tell you what happened after you get back. The Garmin Dash Cam Live can show you what is happening now.
South Africa's numbers explain why people want that. Police figures reported by Safire Insurance show 6,988 vehicles and motorcycles stolen between April and June 2026, about 77 a day. For January to March 2026, AutoTrader reports 4,420 carjackings, about 48 a day. Both are lower than a year earlier, which is good news, but they are still very large numbers.

What "live view" actually means
Many dash cams advertise live view, but it usually works over Wi-Fi, which means you have to be near the car. The Dash Cam Live has its own LTE connection. With an active Garmin LTE plan, you can open the Garmin app and see a live view from almost anywhere there is cell coverage.
Without a plan it still works as a normal dash cam, recording to a microSD card.
What you can do from your phone
Live view: look through the camera at any time.
Location: check where the car is.
Theft alert: you are notified if someone drives your vehicle without your phone inside it.
Parking Guard: if the camera detects an incident while the car is parked, you get a notification with a video clip.
Share footage: send a clip to your insurer, a friend or the police.
It also takes voice commands such as "OK Garmin, save video", so you can save a clip without touching it while driving.
Where it earns its place in South Africa
Parking at malls, offices and estates. Parking Guard is built for the moment you come back to a scratch, or a dent with no note. You get the clip while you are still shopping, not an argument afterwards.
Crash-for-cash scams. In these staged accidents, someone brakes hard in front of you and then claims from you or your insurer. TopAuto reports that high-end vehicles, delivery vehicles and fleets are common targets. Footage with GPS speed, location and time is far better than your word against theirs.
Holiday road trips. Leave the car at the lodge or the airport and check on it whenever you have signal. For the bush, where there is no cell coverage, you want an inReach. See our Garmin shop.
E-hailing drivers and small fleets. A recording that stamps speed, location and time helps settle disputes.
Parents of young drivers. Location tracking shows where the car is. Talk to your teenager about it before you fit it.
A note on insurance: an insurer quoted by BusinessTech says South African drivers do not get a premium discount for having a dash cam. Footage can still act as an extra witness and help your insurer recover your excess.
Video quality
The camera records 1440p video through a 140° lens with Garmin Clarity HDR, and built-in GPS stamps speed, location and time on the footage. It is built to cope with direct sunlight and hot car interiors, which matters on a Johannesburg summer afternoon. It supports microSD cards from 16GB up to 512GB, Class 10 or faster.
It also gives forward collision and lane departure warnings while you drive.
What to know before you buy
We would rather you know this now than find out later:
The live features need a Garmin LTE plan. That plan is paid to Garmin, not to us. At the time of writing, Garmin South Africa lists Standard at R179.99 a month (7 days of cloud storage) and Advanced at R359.99 a month (30 days). Garmin can change these, so check its plan page.
It needs cell coverage. No signal means no live view.
Parking Guard and theft alerts need continuous power. Some vehicles need the Garmin Constant Power Cable, sold separately. For a clean parking setup we recommend a professional hardwire installation.
It records and alerts. It does not stop a thief.
Privacy still applies. Filming on public roads is generally fine, but be careful about how you share footage that shows other people, and keep POPIA in mind. This is not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Garmin Dash Cam Live work in South Africa?
Yes. Garmin South Africa lists LTE plans for it in rand, and it works wherever your plan has cell coverage.
Can I watch my car live without a plan?
Not from anywhere. Without a plan, live view works over Wi-Fi when you are near the car. Live view from anywhere needs an active LTE plan and coverage.
Does it still record without a plan?
Yes. It records to a microSD card like any other dash cam.
What microSD card do I need?
A card from 16GB up to 512GB, Class 10 or faster.
Will it stop my car being stolen?
No. It records, tracks and alerts you. It gives you evidence and a faster warning, but it is not an immobiliser or a tracker.
Can I install it myself?
Yes, the basic setup is DIY. For Parking Guard we recommend a professional hardwire installation.
